He became the caliph on his father's will, and was inaugurated on Ula Jumada 763 H (1364-1409 AD). He ruled as caliph in a very long time, forty-five years, and have many children. Five of his son became caliph, Al-Musta'in Al-Abbas, Al-Mu'tadhid Dawud, Al-Mustakfi Sulaiman, Al-Qaim and Al-Mustanjid Hamza Yusuf.
Some important events that occurred during his reign, among others, at 764 H, Sultan Muhammad Al-Mansur was removed. And as his successor sit Sha'ban ibn Husayn al-Nasir Muhammad ibn Qalawun who then use the title of Al-Ashraf.
In 773 AH, Caliph al-Mutawakkil ordered to the syarif (noble people or descendants of the prophet) to wear a green sign on the turbans they wear in order to differ with the sultan. This is an innovation that he did for the first time.
In this year also appear in human history terkeji man named Timur Leng (Tamerlane), which devastated the country, and massacred people. He continued to do mischief on earth to die in the curse of Allah on 807 H. Leng East is ordinary farmer. Since his youth he grew up as burglars and street robbers. After that he joined the people in charge of feeding the horse sultan. He then cemented his position after the death of the sultan.
In 778 H, Sultan Al-Ashraf died because they were killed, then replaced his son Ali and the degree of Al-Mansur.
In the Beginning Rabiul 779 H, which is very shocking event took place, namely when Aynabaik Zakaria Al-Badri, head of the army, asked Umar ibn Ibrahim ibn al-Mustamsik Billah bin al-Hakim to be the caliph. Umar ibn Ibrahim was crowned himself as caliph without baiat process and without the agreement of the Muslims. He was given the title of Al-Mu'tashim Billah. After that he ordered the Caliph Al-Mutawakkil for exiled to Qush because he held a grudge for the killing of Ashraf.
Shortly afterwards, the Caliph al-Mutawakkil came out of seclusion and re-assume office as caliph. Al-Mu'tashim was removed from his position. As such, he served the Caliph only within 15 days.
In Shafar 783 H, Sultan Al-Mansur's death. His brother named Haji bin Ashraf replace him with the title of Ash-Salih. A year later, Ash-Salih was removed from office, and as his successor is Barquq with Az-Zahir title. He was the first person who became sultan of the Jarasikah.
On Rajab 785 H, Az-Zahir Barquq capture neither the Caliph Al-Mutawakkil and imprisoned in the castle Jabal. To occupy the empty chair empire, then was appointed Muhammad ibn Ibrahim ibn al-Mustamsik bin Al-Hakim with the title of Al-Watsiq Billah. Since then Al-Watsiq became caliph until his death on Wednesday 17 Shawwal 788 H.
The magnifying lobbied Barquq to immediately restore the Caliph Al-Mutawakkil in position. But he rejected the proposal. He even called the brother of Muhammad (Al-Watsiq Billah) named Zakaria bin Ibrahim bin al-Mustamsik bin al-Hakim, who was then serving as governor in Yasirah. He was sworn in and given gelarAl-Mu'tashim Billah. His reign lasted until 791 AH
Barquq feel very sorry for what he did to Al-Mutawakkil. Therefore, he was immediately released from the prison of Al-Mutawakkil and restore his position as caliph. While Zakaria (Al-Mu'tashim) removed from office. Zakaria died at his home, while al-Mutawakkil became caliph continued until he died.
